To get a dog to do what you want means the dog must understand what you are telling it. In order to do this you must train the dog to respond to your commands. Once this is established the dog will recognise what you are saying and hopefully will obey you. But what about doing something when you are not present? How do you ensure that the dog is doing what it is supposed to do if you arent there to make the commands? Enter the citronella bark collar

Correcting unwanted behaviours should not include harmful physical force or violence. Anti bark collars use a punishment mechanism that introduces a negative consequence of a behaviour. In the case of a citronella bark collar this involves a sound, and a spray of liquid the dog finds distasteful. It relies on the dog making the connection between the behaviour and the consequences and learning that not enacting the behaviour will result in no punishment. In this way the dog is trained not to bark. Citronella bark collars are ideal because they dont rely on the human presence for the consequence to be delivered. In line with basic learning principles the closer to the time of the bahaviour that a consequence or reward is given, the quicker the training (or condionting) will be complete.
So, you ensure there is citronella loaded in the spray unit of the collar, then firmly (but not tightly) fit the collar onto the dogs neck, turn the sensor unit on, and walk away. When your dog barks it will hear, see, smell and feel the spray when it is released. This will be accompanied with a sense of dislike for the spray, and thus the dog will make the connection between its behaviour and the consequence. Barking will slowly reduce.
