The website for information on shock and sonic collars.
Apart from the spray collars there are also sonic collars and shock collars.
These collars work in exactly the same way as spray collars. They train your dog not to bark by delivering something the dog dislikes. In this case they deliver a shock (in the case of shock collars) or an audible high pitched sound (in the case of sonic collars).
Shock Collars
Shock collars work by applying a brief electrical shock to the dog. The dog obviously finds the shock to be something it wants to avoid and hence the conditioning to not bark is developed.
Considered les humane to the dog because of the pain inflicted even though it is not severe. Many people shy away from these as a result, instead heading towards the more gentle spray collars.
Where these collars come into their own is with larger and more aggresive dogs that require a stricter regime of training.
Sonic Collars
Sonic collars utilise the auditory spectrum in order to gain the attention of the animal. Working very similar to the spray collar, the sonic collar simply detects the bark and immediately emits a high pitched noise in a spectrum that humans cannot hear. The dog however does and because of the attention grabbing pitch the bark is lessened.
As a conditioning tool it is perhaps a little less effective, not having the ability to grab the attention of more of the dogs senses (such as sight and touch).
